‘Nilakshan Memorial Award and Gold Medal’

‘Sahathevan Nilakshan Memorial Award and Gold Medal’ was constituted in the year 2017 by the Nila Foundation, the friends of the Late Sahathevan Nilakshan from Jaffna Hindu College.

Sahathevan Nilakshan was a versatile young journalist and student leader murdered during the civil war in Jaffna on the 1st of August, 2007.

The award and gold medal are given to the student who secured the highest OGPA (Overall Grade Point Average) at the completion of the  Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Media Studies study programme at University of Jaffna.

‘Aasukavi Kallady Veluppillai’ Memorial Gold Medal for Best Performance in Print Media

The Gold Medal was constituted in the year 2023 by the Family members of Aasukavi Kallady Veluppillai in memories of  Aasukavi Kallady Veluppillai who rendered the variety of services to the field of Print Media and encourage the students of Department of Media Studies, Faculty of Arts towards the field of print media.

The Criteria to select the awardees for the Gold Medal:

  1. The student who should followed B.A. Honors degree in Media Studies at the Department of Media Studies, Faculty of Arts
  2. The student who obtained highest GPA in the following particular Course Units related to ‘Print Media’ entitled to receive the Gold Medal

a)CMCH 21023 Reporting Techniques and Skills (அறிக்கையிடல் தொழில்நுட்பங்களும் திறன்களும்)
b)CMCH 22023 Newspaper Editing: Concepts and Processes (செய்திப்பத்திரிகைச் செம்மையாக்கம் :           எண்ணக்கருக்களும் செயன்முறைகளும்)
c)CMCH 32013   Print Media: Productions and Design (அச்சு ஊடகம் : தயாரிப்புக்களும் வடிவமைப்பும்)
d)CMCH 41043 Investigative Journalism (புலனாய்வு இதழியல்)
e)CMCH 42013 Media Internship (ஊடகத் தொழில்சார் பயிற்சி)       

3. If, more than a single student obtained same GPA for the above Course Units, the average of the raw marks will be calculated for the awardee.

‘Ananthi Sooriyapragasam’ Memorial Gold Medal for Best Performance in Ethical Journalism

The Gold Medal was constituted in the year 2025 by the Thenmaradchi Development Association, United Kingdom in memories of Ananthi Sooriyaoragasam, renowned Tamil broadcaster widely known as ‘BBC Ananthi,’ and to encourage the students of Department of Media Studies, Faculty of Arts to be ethically responsible in the field of journalism.

The Criteria to select the awardees for the Gold Medal:

  1. The student who should followed B.A. Honors degree in Media Studies at the Department of Media Studies, Faculty of Arts
  2. The student who obtained highest sum of GPV in the following particular Course Units related to ‘Ethics and Critical Analysis in the field of Media’’ is entitled to receive the Gold Medal

a) CMCH 21013 Mass Communication and Society (வெகுசனத் தொடர்பாடலும் சமூகமும்)
b) CMCH 21033 Media, Democracy, Law and Ethics (ஊடகம், ஜனநாயகம், சட்டம் மற்றும் ஒழுக்கநெறிகள்)
c) CMCH 31013 Development Communication (அபிவிருத்தித் தொடர்பாடல்)
d) CMCH 31033 Gender and Communication (பால்நிலையும் தொடர்பாடலும்)
e) CMCH 31053 Conflict Sensitive Journalism (முரண்பாட்டு உணர்திறன்மிக்க இதழியல்)
f) CMCH 41043 Investigative Journalism (புலனாய்வு இதழியல்)

3. The student needs to get a minimum Second Class Upper Division.

4. If more than a single student obtained the same Highest Sum of GPV for the relavant Course Units, the average of the raw marks of the above will be calculated for the awardee.
