Department of Media Studies Hosted `Documentary Film Festival- 2024`

The Department of Media Studies hosts the Documentary Film Festival annually for screening of Documentary Films produced by the Media Studies students.

On par with this and part of the Golden Jubilee Celebrations of the University of Jaffna, `Documentary Film Festival- 2024` held on the 04th of October 2024 at the Library Auditorium, University of Jaffna.

The documentary films were produced in a systematic way as an outcome of the course unit ‘Digital Storytelling: Documentary Filmmaking’ at Level III of the Honors Degree programme in Media Studies. The following shortlisted 10 best documentaries which talked about various social, cultural, political and economic issues were screened.

‘பதியம்’ (Pathiyam): The stories of the people who are compelled to be displaced from Upcountry to Vanni during the ethnic riots in South.
‘Arch Angels’: The pathetic status of stray dogs in Jaffna Peninsula.
‘அம்பா’ (Ampha): The narration about the Ampha (Labour Songs) used to be sung by the Fisher Folk in Mannar.
‘பருத்திமுகம்’ (Paruththimuham): The conflict regarding the new establishment of Landing Harbour in Point Pedro.
‘பறையால் பறை’ (Parayal Parai): The richness of Parai (Traditional Drum of Tamils).
‘கழிவறை’ (Kazhivarai): The humanitarian struggle the upcountry estate workers face on lack of proper hygienic washrooms in their ‘Layans’ (Settlements established during the Colonial Rule).
‘Flamingos’: The visual story of the migrated birds reached Mannar from thousands of miles.
‘Golden Jungle’: The effort of the local folk in collecting natural honey from the jungles.
‘கபடி’ (Kapadi): The energetic school girls from Killinochchi who make wonders at the national level in the Kapadi game.
‘சமர்’ (Samar): The present life of a former cadre who shows his talents in Para – Cricket.

The Documentary Film Festival-2024 was presided over by Ms. S.Poongulaly, Head of the Department and Prof.S.Raguram, Dean, Faculty of Arts participated as Special Guest. Staff, Students of the Faculty of Arts and a notable number of audiences from the community including journalists also participated in the event.
