Documentary Film Festival 2023

Screening of Documentary Films produced by the Media Studies students held on the 08th of April 2024 at the Kailasapathy Auditorium, University of Jaffna.
The documentary films were produced in a systematic way as an outcome of the course unit ‘Digital Storytelling: Documentary Filmmaking’ at Level III of the Honors Degree programme in Media Studies. The following shortlisted 10 best documentaries which talked about various social, cultural, political and economic issues were screened.

• ‘தவில் கொட்டு’: The rich and popularity of making local drum (தவில்) from Thavady, Jaffna.
• ‘அலை மகள்’: The life of women from Karainagar who are involved in shallow water fishing.
• ‘ தணல் ‘: The pathetic status of the Upcountry Tamils who are being affected by the fire accidents in their settlements.
• ‘கல்வாடி’: The manufacturing industry of bricks in Batticaloa, ‘கசிவு’: The painful days of the women of upcountry during their menstruation period.
• ‘உயிர்மை’: The trend of farming aligns with nature in Vavuniya.
• ‘நாற்சார்’: The cultural and emotional richness of the நாற்சார் வீடு (Quadrangular House) in Jaffna.
• ‘காவலின் காயங்கள்’: The demining work on war fronts in Northern Peninsula.
• ‘நிலம் ‘: The struggles of Upcountry Tamils for the land rights.
• ‘உறங்கா விழிகள்’: The farmers spent their nights at the paddy fields in order to protect their outcome from the wild elephants in Batticaloa district

The Documentary film festival was presided over by Prof.S.Raguram, Dean, Faculty of Arts and Prof.S.Srisatkunarajah, Vice-Chancellor, University of Jaffna participated as Chief Guest. Ms. S.Poongulaly, Head of the Department, Staff, Students of the Faculty of Arts and a notable number of audiences from the community including journalists also participated in the event.
