MoU Signed between Centre for Media and Information Literacy (CMIL) and the University of Jaffna

The Memorandum of Understanding to promote Media and Information Literacy (MIL) among the students was signed between the Center for Media and Information Literacy (CMIL) and the University of Jaffna on the 19th of July 2022 at the University of Jaffna.

This MoU provides the framework required for both the University of Jaffna and the CMIL to collaborate, share expertise, and work with students and staff to promote activities such as research, training, knowledge-sharing events, and publications in promoting critical news and information consumption.

The MoU was signed on behalf of both organizations by Prof. S. Srisatkunarajah, Vice-Chancellor, the University of Jaffna, and Dr. M.A.Y. Arafath, Director, Center for Media and Information Literacy (CMIL). 

  • PURPOSE:

Increase the capacity among students of the Department of Media Studies, University of Jaffna to respond to increasing information falsehood, while undertaking activities of various nature in advancing rational information consumption, media and information literacy and digital literacy.

  • SCOPE OF COLLABORATION:
  1. Mobility of faculty, scholars, and students of Department of Media Studies from UoJ and staff from CMIL;
  2. Sharing or creation of educational, advocacy and awareness materials and resources.
  3. Formation of Media and Information Literacy Club (MIL-Club) and share knowledge amongst students on a regular interval
  4. Conduct a study on media and information literacy
  5. Provide technical assistance to formulate Media and information Literacy studies by the students
  • ACTIVITIES:
  1. Development of comprehensive gap analysis: CMIL will engage its local and regional stakeholders and develop and validate a strong methodology to conduct the proposed gap analysis. This will include 8 FGD and 16 in-depth expert’s interviews. All the 8 FGDs will be conducted with staff members and students of four universities and 4 media training institutes. 16 expert’s interviews will be conducted with at least 2 senior staff from each of the institutions selected for the gap analysis.
  2. Four MIL Summits: This will be organized virtually for the senior academic staff, students and research fellows from partnering universities to share their experience in (i) teaching and learning MIL, (ii) providing space for a practical learning experience (iii) challenges faced (iv) ideas to strengthen MIL education in Sri Lanka. CMIL will invite one of the universities to co-host the virtual conferences. Global MIL experts from reputed MIL initiatives such as CIVIX, UNESCO-MIL, NEWSEUM, First Draft will be invited to share their experience in the virtual conference too.
  3. Prepare strategy paper for MIL education in Sri Lanka: Towards the end of all four MIL summits, a strategy paper will be prepared by CMIL and endorsed by all the participating organizations. This strategy paper will outline future directions, strategies, recommendations to streamline and enhance MIL education in Sri Lanka.
  4. Launch of revised gap analysis: Eventually, CMIL will engage all the stakeholders who participated in the study and launch the gap analysis.
  • ADVANTAGES TO THE DEPARTMENT AND STUDENTS:
  1. CMIL will invite international MIL experts to share their expertise on the global MIL landscape. The members of the partnering university will be able to interact with those experts. 
  2. Students will be able to be part of the proposed gap analysis and the development of proposed tool-kit
  3. Students and faculty members will be invited to the four MIL summits
  4. University receive branding and visibilities
  5. Any academic/scientific contribution – research review, writing, etc. will be acknowledged
  6. CMIL will provide technical inputs for MIL related activities of the department/university
  7. CMIL will provide technical cooperation in forming MIL clubs in the partnering university
  • DURATION:

This MoU shall be in effect for a period of 03 years from the last date of signature.

▪ MoU Signed between Alcohol and Drug Information Center (ADIC) and the University of Jaffna

The Memorandum of Understanding on Joint Education and Advocacy Programmes on Alcohol, Tobacco and other Drug Prevention and Awareness Collaboration was signed between the Alcohol and Drug Information Center (ADIC) and the University of Jaffna on the 25th of May 2022 at the University of Jaffna.

Prof. S.Srisatkunarajah, Vice-Chancellor, University of Jaffna and Mr. Pubudu Sumanasekara, Executive Director, Alcohol and Drug Information Center (ADIC) signed the MoU on behalf of both institutions.

▪ Purpose:

Increase the capacity among students of the Department of Media Studies, University of Jaffna to respond to alcohol, tobacco and other drugs promotions and to involve in effective prevention activities.

▪ Project Name:  

Capacity development programme to address alcohol, tobacco and other drug issues among the university students’ community.

▪ Project Duration: 03 years (2022 – 2024)

▪ Overall objectives:

  • To build the capacity of the students of the Department of Media Studies to engage them in creating awareness among the local community and investigating social issues regarding alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs.
  • To improve the understanding of students of the Department of Media Studies on trade manipulation of print and electronic media regarding alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs.
  • To develop the capacity to produce the creative materials to mobilize the community to have appropriate awareness regarding the usage of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. 

 

▪Expected Results:

  • Students understand the concepts of economic, social and health harm caused by alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs.
  • Develop active students’ volunteer groups to implement alcohol prevention activities within the university and local communities.
  • Educate students on promoting factors of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs.
  • Increase the positive attitude of being free from alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs among students.
  • Reduce the usage of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs among students.
  • Increase the skills of students to develop prevention materials.
  • The community and students of schools in the Jaffna district will get opportunities to create awareness about alcohol, tobacco and other drugs.

 

▪ Benefits that will be received by the Department of Media Studies, University of Jaffna:

▪It will be a good platform for the students to learn the awareness and advocacy activities such as developing the short film, conducting training programme and disseminate drug prevention information.

▪University students will be motivated to conduct prevention activities on usages of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs among their own groups and the local communities.

▪The students of the Department of Media Studies will be learnt the design and production of the materials on the prevention and control of the usages of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs.

▪The University of Jaffna will play a vital role to minimize the impacts of the usages of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs in the local community.

▪Empower the students against alcohol, tobacco, and other drug promotions and increase their attention towards education.

▪Increase the human resources among university staff and students to fight against alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs promotions.

▪Identify creative approaches to make changes among youth and the community.

▪Develop a sustainable process to give technical support in order to change the community through media.

▪Develop future creative media professionals to promote awareness and advocacy on alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs promotions.

Memorandum of Understanding (MoA) between University of Jaffna and HELVETAS Sri Lanka

The Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) has been signed between University of Jaffna and HELVETAS Sri Lanka by the Professor Sivakolundu Srisatkunarajah, Vice Chancellor of University of Jaffna and Ms. Subhashini Dissanayake, Country Representative, HELVETAS Intercooperation gGmbH on 15.09.2020.

‘Incubator Space for Promoting Information Right and Freedom of Expression (InSPIRE)’

BACKGROUND:
This proposed project has been designed to promote an increased understanding and respect for freedom of expression, by empowering a community of youth to creatively express and advocate for the focus areas of (i) gender-sensitive freedom of expression and (ii) ethical and socially responsible media expressions.

PURPOSE / KEY OPERATIONAL OBJECTIVES:
This MoA will establish an effective partnership between HELVETAS and the University of Jaffna to develop skills and knowledge of selected Media and Journalism students within University and for the provision of opportunities, resources and learning space.
The above goals will accomplished by undertaking the following activities:

  • Designing, Creation and Construction of the Incubator Space in the University
  • 8 two-day university-based trainings on civic activism, right to information, digital citizenship, media ethics and freedom of expression
  • 8 practical learning workshops on Media Production (2 numbers) clustered as per media categories. (Short films, documentaries, news production, digital art etc.)
  • 6 inter-District exchange learning between selected cluster members of the other two National Universities in Sri Lanka
  • Outreach initiatives (4 per District) to present media products.
  • Two Annual forums for sharing learning and strengthening the Network
  • One national forum for the dissemination of the new media products and research findings to multiple stakeholders.

DURATION: 3 Years (2020, 2021 and 2022)


BENEFITS FOR THE DEPARTMENT OF MEDIA STUDIES, UNIVERSITY OF JAFFNA

  • The respective department to be promoted as a model department committed to mobile multi-disciplinary learning for their students, through the establishment of a replicable pilot Incubator Space with Integrated News Room, a pilot attempt and this is going to be a first digital mobile camera studio in Sri Lankan universities and that will enhance creative learning and alternative free expression.
  • As an outcome of this collaboration, the department may have grant opportunities to access resources and new technologies to benefit the Media Lab of the Department of Media Studies.
  • The process of mentoring and guidance will enable the students of the networks to build links with subject experts and professionals, obtain professional guidance and support for their media products to reach a wider national / global audience.
  • The capacity building element will also include the development of skills in alternative and new media expressions through the provision of tools related to freedom of expression, and in the creation of the Incubator Spaces, the knowledge and skills acquired by individual members, will enable them to communicate and collaborate with their peers in the creation of a network.
  • The members who are capacitated will be positioned to deliver media products capturing and promoting the concepts of gender-sensitive and socially inclusive freedom of expression and media ethics.

BENEFITS FOR THE INDIVIDUAL STUDENTS OF MEDIA STUDIES AND MEDIA PROFESSIONALS IN NORTHERN PROVINCE

  • The benefits that will accrue to the students will be both personal and professional growth of individual members, that are empowered to act and think innovatively, creatively and in a socially responsible manner.
  • Students having gained skills and knowledge enabling and motivating them to communicate, collaborate with their peers are positioned to disseminate messages linked to freedom of expression and media ethics.
  • The intra-university network within their respective University Departments and subsequently and inter-university network of 350 future journalists and media professionals.
  • The collective and consultative design of the Incubator Spaces by the Core Groups and the organic growth of these spaces will enable a further strengthening of the network.
  • The promotion of knowledge and the provision of tools on freedom of expression and civic activism will provide a stimulant to analytical and creative thinking at an individual level, thus enabling the individual members to internalize the concepts of freedom of expression leading to proactive and sustained activism.
  • The student members of this network will benefit immensely with a practical alternative to classroom learning, with exposure and guidance to develop new media and research products, for alternative expression and research products.
  • The Incubator Space is an instrument to build the empowered network of youth activists (350 students) and for them to express and develop their ideas/activities.
  • These individuals will in turn be empowered to contribute to the media sector and raise the standards, moving away from conventional style of media and reporting.


BENEFITS FOR THE COMMUNITY AND FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION

  • In the development of new media products and research products, there will be an extensive process of information gathering and collation of youth and community experiences.
  • 150 media products (including short-films, photography and digital stories) to illustrate and reiterate freedom of expression, and 2 research outputs “Setting up Incubator Spaces” and “Freedom of Expression and the new media in Sri Lanka”, will be led by the project implementers with input from network.
  • These experiences and other young voices will be integrated into the new media products and captured within the survey for the research. It is at this phase that the capacitated youth will generate ideas for new media products.
  • The dissemination of the new media products will target other departments within the selected universities, other media departments within other national universities, high school students and other youth members within youth networks in district, community-based groups and local authority representatives.

Memorandum of Understanding (MoA) for the Academic Collaboration between University of Jaffna and Garden City University, Bangalore, India

The Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) for the Academic Collaboration has been signed between University of Jaffna and Garden City University, Bengaluru, India by the Professor Sivakolundu Srisatkunarajah, Vice Chancellor of University of Jaffna and the Registrar, City University, Bengaluru, India on 12.10.2021, on the invitation of the School of Media Studies, Garden City University.

Garden City University, Bengaluru, is a state private university in the state of Karnataka, India and it was established through Act No. 47 of 2013 in Karnataka State and is approved by UGC, Government of India.

Under the GCU, the School of Media Studies was established in the year 1997. The School aims at equipping the students with knowledge in handling the latest technological advancements in media, with a balanced curriculum that challenges students to confront contemporary issues in media theory, research, policy, planning and management. Here, an optimum balance is maintained between theory and practice.

As an immediate outcome of the MoA, the School of Media Studies of the Garden City University conducted an International Conference based on the theme IBEE- Innovation, Business, Entrepreneurship and Employment in the Field of Media Studies on 24th November 2021 in collaboration with the Department of Media Studies, Faculty of Arts, University of Jaffna as the academic collaborator.

The title of the conference was ‘Media & Communication Practices in the Post Covid World: Innovations, Opportunities and Perspectives’ under the discipline of Media Studies leading to Entrepreneurship and Employment’

The main goal of the conference was to create new knowledge related to IBEE in Media Studies through the plenary session, panel discussion, and research paper presentation.

At the Conference, Dr.S.Raguram, Head, Department of Media Studies delivered the Key Note Address on ‘The Transitional stage of Print Media during Corona Pandemic: A Sri Lankan Experience’.
