Sharing Session with Mr.S.Someetharan, Documentary Filmmaker

In order to enhance the teaching of professional media to the students, the opportunities have been utilized by the Department of Media Studies to invite senior journalists, filmmakers and editors for the ‘Sharing Sessions’ in addition to the academic inputs.

On par with the above, Mr.S.Someetharan, Documentary filmmaker, a versatile and well-known Documentary filmmaker conducted the ‘Sharing Session’ on the topic of ‘Documentary and Short Film Making’ with the students of Media Studies and Drama and Theatre on the 20th of December 2023 (Wednesday) for the students of Media Studies at the Arts Seminar Hall, Faculty of Arts.

Mr.S.Someetharan, Filmmaker and Audio Visual Journalist; started his career as a radio anchor in Colombo and then he moved to Tamil daily newspaper “Thinakural”, Jaffna edition, reporting from Jaffna. He later joined the English weekly ‘North-Eastern Herald’ in 2003 and served on its editorial board, working on social, cultural, political, and environmental issues across the island nation. Later, as a freelance journalist, he penned several articles for various publications. He has contributed his expertise in producing documentaries for the British Broadcasting Corporation. In 2004, he moved to Chennai, India and joined Loyola College to further his studies in Visual Communication. ‘Burning Memories’, his earlier documentary film on the burning of Jaffna Library, set off waves among historical documentary films in South Asia, which documented the war-scarred life of the library and the socio-political violence.

The opening remark for the Sharing Session was given by Prof.S.Raguram, Dean, Faculty of Arts. Ms.S.Poongulay, Head, Department of Media Studies and Dr. Rathithran, Senior Lecturer, Department of Drama and Theatre were also presented at the Sharing Session.
